Eczema Topical Options

Got Eczema ? Topical Options

I have continued to receive questions in reference to essential oil options for dry skin and eczema like symptoms. Many things can contribute to challenges with eczema such as allergies, digestive dysfunction, build up of toxins and/or insufficient protein breakdown. In this post, I will discuss a few DIY ideas I would utilize if this was a challenge I was experiencing.

What is eczema? It is an inflammatory condition that can manifest itself through dry, itchy, thickened or even scaly like skin. This would be considered dry eczema.

When the eczema continues to the point of blisters that burst or open exuding pus, this is called weeping eczema and can become infected. Make sure you talk to your dermatologist for advice and counsel before beginning any regimen.

Again, there are many different things that can be applied to eczema. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list or even the only application, but rather an example of carriers I may use and possible essential oils. You can choose to follow these ideas or something else.

I really like the following carrier oils as options, and I am sharing the reason why and/or the nutrients contained. I will make this comment that the carrier oil is as important as the essential oil if not even more important.

Carrier Oils

• Grapeseed Oil – vitamin E, minerals and proteins. Safe for most skin types, it absorbs easily.

• Hemp Seed Oil – high in essential fatty acids, 9 amino acids for protein building. Shown to improve eczema due to the good polyunsaturated fats.

• Sweet Almond Oil (do not use if a nut allergy is present) – B Vitamins, Vitamin E, gentle enough for an infant.

• Jojoba Oil – closest in nature to human sebum, Vitamin E,  and minerals.

Can I use Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO)? Yes, the carriers mentioned above just have a more complete nutrient profile that I like for something like Eczema, but FCO can work just fine.

Carrier Oil – Fractionated Coconut

Caution: Do not skimp on the amount of carrier thinking more essential oil and less carrier is better, as you may dry out the skin even more, creating greater irritation.

Essential Oils I like that could be very helpful:

Lavender, Chamomile (Roman or German), Cedarwood, Tea Tree, Pure Repair (RHO First Aid Blend), Myrrh, Frankincense, Helichrysum, and Patchouli.

Lavender essential oil

Roman Chamomile essential oil

Cedarwood Atlas essential oil

Tea Tree essential oil

Pure Repair First Aid Essential oil Blend

Frankincense essential oil

Helichrysum essential oil

Patchouli essential oil

Let me walk you through what a possible recipe may look like for me (also for an adult or child over 5):

• Obtain a 60ml (2oz) amber or blue glass container with a dropper.

• Add 4 tsp of Grapeseed Oil

• Add 1 tsp of Jojoba Oil

• Add 10 drops of Restore Hope Oils Pure Repair (Contains: Lavender, Geranium, Tea Tree and FCO) as the oils in reference to this would be anti-stress, antimicrobial and/or anti-inflammatories.

• Add 5 drops of Chamomile (Roman or German) or Lavender as they are anti-inflammatories.

• Add 5 drops of Cedarwood as it can be great as an antibacterial, antifungal and minor astringent.

• Add 3 tsp of Hemp Seed Oil

• Put the dropper on and shake for 30 – 60 seconds to facilitate blending

• I would apply something like this from 3-6 times a day if needed.

As I mentioned before you may want to use different essential oils than those mentioned above. Feel free to give others a try.

Drone Wins Battle – Helichrysum Testimonial

Drone Wins Battle –  Helichrysum Testimonial

What a blessing to be with you today! I have this phenomenal friend who flies drones for a living as a videographer. He is one of those people you just like to be around. He is very unassuming, but as you observe him you can see he is a very bright aware human being. I enjoy learning from him.

This friend texted me before getting on the plane to fly home after finishing a filming trip in Maui, Hawaii. His text asked if I knew of any oils that were antiseptic and that could possibly help with an injury.

I said, “What happened Brother?”

He told me they were filming in very windy weather. In fact, he was having to land these very large drones with cameras on them onto a boat experiencing 20 foot swells! Right at the end of the trip there was a challenge with one of the drones and he ended up getting his finger cut up pretty badly.

I told him to come over when he got home and we would put something together for him. I ended up making him a blend that included Pure Repair and a hint of Helichrysum. The blend ended up being approximately 90% carrier oil and 10% essential oil so that his wound would not dry out.

Helichrysum essential oil

Pure Repair (First Aid Blend)

On a wound or cut if it starts drying out then it is because there is not enough carrier oil in the mixture. I put the mixture in a 10ml bottle with a squeeze dropper cap so he could just squeeze out the drops twice a day. I want you to see how an essential oil can help repair and restore damage to the skin.

Sorry if the pictures are graphic for some, but they tell the story. Kudos to my friend as he is a great student and was consistent on the application:

Picture #1 Day 1: The day he received the injury and stitches.

Picture #2 Day 2: One day after using the mixture.

Picture #3 is 3.5 weeks after applying the mixture.

Essential oils can be so helpful. Reach out with any questions.

Keep smiling and essential oil on,

Are There Essential Oils That Can Help A Specific Organ, Or System Of The Body To Promote Blood Movement?

Blog

Can Essential Oils Help A Specific Organ?

“Wait a minute! You mean to tell me there are many different oils that can help a specific organ or system of the body?! Why didn’t anyone ever tell me this?!”

This is a common response I get from people as they begin to learn more about essential oils. People often are not aware that there are many options to look at in order to support an organ or area of the body. I believe this happens for two reasons:

The individual just lacks experience with natural products and the fact that plants have many different uses depending on the plant or oil in discussion.

We as a population have become accustomed to going to specialists and taking medications that only really do one thing. Then we go to another specialist for a remedy to do one thing. Can you see the pattern?

When I make a blend I will look at an organ or system of the body and research specific oils to support that area of the body. I am looking for complimentary oils in smell and function. Blends are created with the intent to create a synergistic approach to health, but that does not mean a single oil can’t be just as helpful.

When starting out blends are very easy and quick to use, but what if you do not have a blend nearby? This week I want to share with you three single oils as options that can be supportive of three of our most important organs.

Today I will share with you three oils that may aid the heart. Our organs are always working and the heart is no exception. The heart is responsible for moving blood throughout the body. Without blood movement we get no oxygen to our cells, brain, muscles and other areas.

The heart also houses many different emotions which these oils can influence as well. Take a look below.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

Lavender essential oil

Think of Lavender as a protector of the heart.
I use 1-2 drops in a carrier oil to help in prevention of heart injury.
Lavender is used in aromatherapy promoting lower blood pressure and possible palpitations.
The heart can experience great sadness and stress. Lavender is helpful for these emotions.
Other areas Lavender benefits: Reproductive, Integumentary, and Central Nervous Systems

Black Pepper (Piper nigrum)

Think of Black Pepper as a motivator of the cardiovascular system.

In aromatherapy Black Pepper has been used to aid anemia where an oil that supports both the heart and spleen may be needed. The spleen helps in the making of red blood cells and is one of the organs the heart calls upon when it is under attack.
I apply 1 drop of Black Pepper combined with 1 teaspoon of carrier oil over the heart area or to the bottom of my feet when I feel sluggish.
Sometimes the heart can get stuck from trauma or unachieved dreams and Black Pepper can help us get moving and out of this state. Black Pepper is arguably my favorite spice oil.

Other capacities of Black Pepper: Anti-inflammatory, immune support, brain support, digestive, muscle function and addiction recovery.
Cautions: I recommend using Black Pepper in short bursts meaning for a few days at a time and then taking a break and beginning again.

Marjoram, Sweet (Origanum majorana)

Marjoram essential oil

Think of Marjoram as the calming and comforting oil to the heart.
Used in aromatherapy to assist in lowering blood pressure it has the capacity to help alleviate high blood pressure.
Marjoram promotes self-care and when we need some self-nurturing.

I apply 1-2 drops with carrier oil over my heart area when I need to calm or want to relax from a stressful moment.
Other areas Marjoram may assist: Muscle tension (Carrie’s favorite muscle warming oil), relaxing and sleep aid, antimicrobial, and digestive.

Caution: Do not use it during pregnancy. Prolonged use may lower libido over time.

Again this is not an exhaustive list, but an opportunity for you to see different single oils and how they may support the heart. Tomorrow we want to make sure the heart is pumping the best blood so I will introduce you to the next organ and oils associated. Stay tuned.

Can You Feel In Your Joints When The Weather Is Changing?

Blog

Can You Feel Your Joints When The Weather Is Changing?

How many of you have a built in weather system in your body? Meaning that you can feel in your joints when the weather is changing? My wife Carrie had three back surgeries before she was 30 and she can tell me if the weather is changing.

I live in Kansas where some days it can be 64 degrees Farhenheit and absolutely beautiful and the next day it can drop to 15 degrees! That is a 49 degree drop in temperature friends! Not normal but happens more than I prefer.

My question then becomes can I be proactive and lessen the blow to my joints when the weather or barometric pressure changes rapidly? Well, the answer is yes. This can be done in many ways. Let me share with you a few:

Pure Mobility Essential Oil Blend – For those of you who have been waiting it is back and it is awesome!
I apply, topically, 2-3 drops of Pure Mobility Essential Oil Blend in ½ a teaspoon of carrier oil (Fractionated Coconut Oil).

Pure Mobility Essential Oil Blend

Massage the oil into the joint or muscle of concern before bed if there will be a big change in temperature the next day.

Apply the same amount throughout the day as needed.

For longer muscle and joint relief
I apply the essential oil as discussed above. I then apply the Pure Mobility Roll On I just massaged in. I originally built the Rub and oil to be used together for greater strength.

At the same time I try to avoid or dramatically limit sugar, dairy and beef

I tend to experience more challenges with joint and muscle discomfort when I have had more of the above foods. Why?

The above foods tend to create more acid in the body and more acid may create more deterioration of connective tissue over time.

Increase my digestive enzymes

Digestive enzymes not only help to break down our foods so we experience less long term acid, but they also help to repair the body. I take one capsule a meal, but when I know I need more help I increase my enzymes to two a meal.

These are just a few ideas of ways we help to lessen the intensity that weather change can cause on the body. Give Pure Mobility Roll On Blend a try.

Essential Oils That Feel Like Summer

Blog

Can I Have Summer Dad?

As you may have already figured out I am a family man. So in this post I wanted to share with you a ritual I have with one of my daughters each night when I am home. Each night before bed I will help her choose what oil she wants in her diffuser. Due to processing delays sometimes, it is very hard for her to get her words out in a grammatically correct manner.

She will lean into me some days when she is struggling and say, “Dad, I can’t say my words.”

So, often at night she will come up to the kitchen and stand looking at me until I say something like, “Do you want me to help you put oil in your diffuser tonight?” She will then say “yes” or “probably” and that is my cue to fill the diffuser.

She has been on a Lemon Eucalyptus kick for quite a while. Lemon Eucalyptus is a great sedative when diffused and is a great immune and respiratory oil. It has a very herbaceous scent and very little is needed compared to other oils in the diffuser.

Although tonight I asked her if she wanted Lemon Eucalyptus again and she responded with,
Can I have summer, Dad?

Lemon Eucalyptus Essential Oil

I said, “Do you mean you want a scent that reminds you of summer?”
She said, “Yes!”

I grabbed Orange and said, “Well, a lot of summer scents could keep you up so give this a smell.”
She smelled it and did not reject it. Instead, she said, “Oh brother, Dad!”

Oh brother, Dad translates into, “Okay Dad, just put it into the diffuser and do not ask me anymore questions. I am tired.”

She is a hoot, and it is wonderful to be her dad. Her comment got me thinking about what scents could be considered summer scents with more of a relaxing effect in case you or I wanted to improve our sleep? Here are a few of my favorites besides Lemon Eucalyptus:

Cedarwood Atlas – very calming, with anti-inflammatory capacity when applied topically. Also a great option for children who may need a little help getting to sleep.

I would apply a drop to the bottom of my feet with 1-2 drops with carrier oil over my chest and neck at bedtime.

Cedarwood Atlas essential oil

Red Mandarin – similar to Orange, but even more relaxing for me. This is also a great option for children who may struggle falling asleep. We always have this oil on hand in our home.

I apply 1-2 drops with carrier oil over my chest and then inhale the excess on my hands as I am about to pull the covers over me to go to sleep.

Red Mandarin Essential Oil

Bergamot – yes, another citrus, but oh so wonderful in its ability to cleanse the mind of anxious feelings while we sleep.
I would diffuse Bergamot with some Orange in my bedroom 30 minutes before I went to bed.

Bergamot Essential Oil

Cypress – stress reliever, improves blood flow and immune support.
I like to apply a little Cypress with Cedarwood on the bottom of my feet for a truly grounding and relaxing experience.

On a mission to help others feel & experience hope one by one

On a mission to help others feel & experience hope one by one

Have you ever had a conversation that conjured up a lot of memories you had not thought about for awhile? I made a new friend today who is a writer and she was asking me about my past and how Carrie (my wife) and I got into essential oils and natural wellness.

It took me  longer than usual to get started writing this post . I spent a lot of time and my thoughts went well into the evening as I wanted to recount a story that my conversation with my friend led me to think about.

After having another ERCP (Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) or procedure where physicians take a scope through the small intestine to go in and view the bile ducts and liver, I was exhausted. My body historically has not responded to general anesthesia well.

This time around it was no different. After this procedure I experienced very dramatic shaking. My whole body would flex every 2-3 seconds as though I was trying to lift some massive weight unsuccessfully from the ground.

I had absolutely no control. While flexing I felt my body launch from side to side in the bed, but I could not stop it. Nor did I have the strength. I would sense a nurse come by once in a while and she would speak softly to me as I would bound uncontrollably from side to side.

I heard her say multiple times to another nurse in a quiet voice, “He is not stopping, and I have given him what they told me too.” I felt a tear roll down my face.

After about another 15 minutes the rest of my body started to slowly be able to move and I tried to thank the nurse in jumbled words as she continued to give me soft encouragement. This particular day I experienced about 60 minutes of hitting back and forth against the sides of the bed.

Things eventually began to calm some with only random shakes of the leg or body. As I slowly opened my eyes, I saw pillows lining the bed. The pillows were protecting me from the metal rails that I continued to hit uncontrollably. As I raised my arms, I felt something around my head, and I couldn’t figure out what it was?

I faintly heard the voice of my beautiful wife, Carrie, in the hallway with the nurse. All the while I was trying to feel and figure out what in the world was on my head.

Then I heard a comment to my wife, “Oh, darn it, we didn’t want you to see that!”

The nurse hurried over and loosened this large piece of Velcro that was used to strap a pillow to my head to protect it from when my body would hit the sides of the bed. Carrie held her composure well, lovingly looked at me, and smiled stating she liked my new look.

You may ask, “Why are you sharing this random story, Gavin?” Truthfully, we have all gone through difficult things and continue to go through difficult things. None of us have a monopoly on the world’s problems.

I looked back on this story in my mind today and thought of how long ago that situation seemed. I then thought of the following quote:

“When you meet someone, treat them as if they are in serious trouble, and you will be right more than half the time.”
-Henry B. Eyring

The nurse and my wife played important roles in this story to help lighten my emotional load. You and I can do the same for others. Restore Hope Oils is not just a catchy name, but a mission to help others feel and experience hope one by one.

Continue being amazing human beings.

Keep smiling and essential oil on,
