Do Essential Oils Provide Nutrients?

Do Essential Oils Provide Nutrients?

Back in 2010, when I really began studying and using essential oils I started to see a phrase start popping up on car windows, billboards and on websites.

The phrase was this:

“There is an oil for that!”

I questioned that phrase the more I got into essential oils. Now, don’t get me wrong, essential oils are my world! I eat, sleep, and drink essential oils and essential oil research on a daily basis! But essential oils cannot do everything.

Essential oils in their most basic sense are communicators. When experienced, they help the body to better communicate between nerves and systems to help create greater balance. Essential oils can potentially aid every system of the body, but there is one thing they do not do.

Essential oils do not provide long-term nutrients, or rather the daily amount needed for the body to function, they can improve how the body uses certain nutrients, but we have to get nutrients from another source.

I want to share with you two liver nutrients I like to use, why I use them and how often I use them. These are just products I like, and I receive no financial benefit from you clicking on the links. This is purely informational.

A key point to remember is that I am using these products as nutrients as opposed to detoxifiers. I also do not use these products at the same time and am only using one or the other in a day.

Solaray Liver Blend SP-13 – This is a more traditional North American formulation with Milk Thistle and other herbs that may help support liver function. This is my favorite product by Solaray.

Why I use it – It contains herbs that have tonic, anti-inflammatory, repairing and cleansing capacity. Research has shown these herbs to have hepatoprotective properties.

How often I use it – Remember, I am using this as a nutrient more than a detoxifier. The bottle says to take one capsule three times a day. My body is super sensitive to supplements and oils in general. I take one capsule in the morning with my breakfast for three days in a row and then gauge how I feel.
I ask questions like the following: Should I continue three more days, take it twice a day, or do I need a break. Furthermore, I find I do not ever need to take this supplement three times a day.

Liver Blend Sp-13 – Solaray

Himalaya LIVERCARE – This company makes some fantastic products, and this product is more of an Ayurvedic (Indian) herbal formulation without the traditional Milk Thistle. I really like the herb Yarrow and its amazing capacity combined with the other nutrients.

Why I use it – This gives my body many phytonutrients, which I feel are needed during the stressful time of eating. It is a great product, but I use it very differently than the Solaray product. I use it as a proactive approach to protecting the liver during eating.

How I use it – This is a blend of herbs that are meant to be taken before a meal to help protect the liver during eating and the breakdown of nutrients. I take one capsule right before dinner time. It can be taken up to two times a day, but I find I do well with once a day.

If someone were seeking to repair the liver, they may look at taking this twice a day, but be sure to discuss it with your healthcare practitioner.

Reminder:
Check with your healthcare practitioner before beginning a new supplement regimen.
In order to use supplements well, I have to stop and listen to my body. I ask myself do I feel more energy with this supplement? Do I sense my digestive system is less stressed?

Is it cleansing my bowels too much, just right, or stopping me up?

Does this supplement cause me any additional discomfort?

Success with anything depends on your goal. Don’t just take a supplement to take it, have a goal in mind.
The above supplements are great on their own and someone may find just taking one of these is great, so listen to your body. I only wanted to share with you a few options I use when seeking to fortify my liver and filtering systems of the body from a nutrient standpoint.

On a mission to help others feel & experience hope one by one

Have you ever had a conversation that conjured up a lot of memories you had not thought about for awhile? I made a new friend today who is a writer and she was asking me about my past and how Carrie (my wife) and I got into essential oils and natural wellness.

It took me  longer than usual to get started writing this post . I spent a lot of time and my thoughts went well into the evening as I wanted to recount a story that my conversation with my friend led me to think about.

After having another ERCP (Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography) or procedure where physicians take a scope through the small intestine to go in and view the bile ducts and liver, I was exhausted. My body historically has not responded to general anesthesia well.

This time around it was no different. After this procedure I experienced very dramatic shaking. My whole body would flex every 2-3 seconds as though I was trying to lift some massive weight unsuccessfully from the ground.

I had absolutely no control. While flexing I felt my body launch from side to side in the bed, but I could not stop it. Nor did I have the strength. I would sense a nurse come by once in a while and she would speak softly to me as I would bound uncontrollably from side to side.

I heard her say multiple times to another nurse in a quiet voice, “He is not stopping, and I have given him what they told me too.” I felt a tear roll down my face.

After about another 15 minutes the rest of my body started to slowly be able to move and I tried to thank the nurse in jumbled words as she continued to give me soft encouragement. This particular day I experienced about 60 minutes of hitting back and forth against the sides of the bed.

Things eventually began to calm some with only random shakes of the leg or body. As I slowly opened my eyes, I saw pillows lining the bed. The pillows were protecting me from the metal rails that I continued to hit uncontrollably. As I raised my arms, I felt something around my head, and I couldn’t figure out what it was?

I faintly heard the voice of my beautiful wife, Carrie, in the hallway with the nurse. All the while I was trying to feel and figure out what in the world was on my head.

Then I heard a comment to my wife, “Oh, darn it, we didn’t want you to see that!”

The nurse hurried over and loosened this large piece of Velcro that was used to strap a pillow to my head to protect it from when my body would hit the sides of the bed. Carrie held her composure well, lovingly looked at me, and smiled stating she liked my new look.

You may ask, “Why are you sharing this random story, Gavin?” Truthfully, we have all gone through difficult things and continue to go through difficult things. None of us have a monopoly on the world’s problems.

I looked back on this story in my mind today and thought of how long ago that situation seemed. I then thought of the following quote:

“When you meet someone, treat them as if they are in serious trouble, and you will be right more than half the time.”
-Henry B. Eyring

The nurse and my wife played important roles in this story to help lighten my emotional load. You and I can do the same for others. Restore Hope Oils is not just a catchy name, but a mission to help others feel and experience hope one by one.

Continue being amazing human beings.

Keep smiling and essential oil on,

You Are Not What You Eat

Blog

You Are Not What You Eat

We are not what we eat so much as we are what we absorb. They are not the same thing. We can only utilize what we absorb. There are so many factors to create great digestion, but one of the most important is having efficient digestive enzyme production. Enzyme deficiency can have a dramatic effect on our minds and bodies.

When I was first diagnosed with a rare autoimmune liver disease called Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis I began to study not only essential oils, but also more about digestive enzymes. I found when I added plant based digestive enzymes to my diet digestion happened so much faster.

Digestive enzymes are not the same thing as a probiotic. Sometimes people get probiotics and enzymes mixed up. They are quite different.

Enzymes are proteins that act as catalysts to accelerate chemical reactions in the body. Digestion as a whole is a massive group of chemical reactions happening in order to give your system the fuel and nutrients it needs. There are many types of enzymes, but we will focus only on digestive enzymes today.

When I say that enzymes can accelerate processes, I mean it. Some aspects of absorption that could take 24 hours can happen in mere seconds with the help of an enzyme. Adding plant based digestive enzymes to your diet can have amazing benefits. Especially for those over 40 years of age.

Enzymes have what is called “specificity” or in other words they are very specialized in how they work. I am going to name some types of enzymes and what their specialties are below:

1.      Protease – breaks down only proteins

2.      Lipase – breaks down only lipids

3.      Cellulase – breaks down cellulose

4.      Invertase – breaks down table sugars

5.      Lactase – breaks down lactose (we hear about so many people being lactose intolerant because when dairy milk is pasteurized the natural enzymes to help us break down dairy are destroyed)

6.      Amylase – breaks down starches (great for those of us that were born and raised in Idaho and who love our potatoes!)

These are just a few enzymes in the body. I take different digestive enzymes for different things, but I mostly take a broad-spectrum plant based digestive enzyme that contains many of the enzymes I mentioned above.

Every meal I eat with enzymes and the difference is amazing for me. It is night and day.

Here are a few brands that I have seen great success with. I do not receive anything from these companies I just want you to know about their products:
Evince Naturals Digest Plus – https://evincenaturals.com/shop/digestplus-help-digest-fats-carbs-protein/

This is a great broad spectrum digestive enzyme that I have used for years and done very well with.

Dynamic Enzymes – https://dynamicenzymes.com/digestive-enzymes/

This is a great company for more specific digestive enzymes (such as gluten or fat digestion focused) and their more broad based digestive enzymes are great as well.
Enzymes are key to almost every chemical reaction in the body from nerve impulses in the brain, breathing, the beating of the heart to digestion, obviously.

When you and I have sufficient enzymes our immune systems are working at optimal levels. When we lack digestive enzymes other systems of the body are not able to function at their best.
Think of enzymes as the activators in the body. You may ask where essential oils fit in all of this?

It is simple, enzymes are the activators (engine) and essential oils are more like the deliverers (drivers of the car) of the message.

They work synergistically to support better communication and absorption throughout the body.

If you were to ask me, “Gavin, what are more important essential oils or digestive enzymes?” I would tell you, essential oils and digestive enzymes are both necessary. I take them both with me wherever I go.

Reach out with any questions and make today amazing!

Keep smiling and essential oil on,

Too Much Essential Oil? How Do I Know?

Blog

Too Much Essential Oil? How Do I Know?

How do you know if you are using too much of an essential oil? Another way to ask this question is how do I know if an essential oil is possibly too much for my body?

The response from the body could be very similar in both cases. I want to discuss three signs, in reference to topical use, that the body may be getting too much essential oil and to address this issue there may be some simple solutions:

The skin may turn red and itch from irritation.

This is the body saying that the concentration of an essential oil is too high and greater amounts of dilution should be used.

If I was already diluting with a carrier and my skin went red I would look at using more carrier or possibly a different carrier oil.

Skin is becoming very dry where oil has been applied.

This is a sign that again not enough carrier oil (Fractionated Coconut Oil, Safflower, etc.) is not being used so the skin is getting dried out.

Carrier Oil – Fractionated Coconut

People who have been taught to use a lot of essential oils NEAT (without dilution) will eventually run into this challenge. I only use essential oils utalizing NEAT for very specific circumstances and depending on the body type I may need more dilution than you and vice versa.

Mostly when the body begins to sweat.

To illustrate this circumstance  someone reached out to me a while ago and said “I love Pure Regen, it is strong! I could feel it cleansing and I broke a sweat the first time I used it.” This is another example of where added dilution would be needed.

The sweating is telling us that the oil is absorbing too quickly and so absorption is slowed by using in conjunction with a carrier or more carrier oil.

Someone may ask, “Gav, I thought Pure Regen was pre-diluted?” Answer: It is pre-diluted, but each body is different and a more sensitive body may need more dilution. It is recommended upon first time use of any new oil that carrier oil be used until you are clear on how the body will respond.

To sum up the simple When in doubt just use more carrier oil or take a break from that oil. It really is that simple.

Daddy I Nee Ma Oil – An Essential Oil Bedtime Story

Blog

Daddy I Nee Ma Oil – An Essential Oil Bedtime Story

There was a sample green oil bottle on my office desk the other day and my littlest walked in and asked, “Daddy, what’s this?”

I said, “It is a bottle for oil.”

She said, “My oil?”

I said, “Are you wanting me to make you your very own oil?”

“Yes, Daddy”, she said.

I said, “Okay, let me think about what to make for you.”

Now this little one runs 100 mph on a slow day and I watch her wonderful Mom striving to channel the little one’s energy in a constructive manner.

If you can imagine a race track in our home she runs from the entry, to the family room, to the kitchen and back to the entry in one big circle and she will do it over and over. She puts the Energizer Bunny to shame.

She is fearless for so many things, but something I have seen is a fear growing around the idea of pooping and it is traumatizing for her. There has been such pain around it. Oftentimes we as adults take the natural elimination process for granted.

Typically, when we experience constipation one of the emotional aspects can be an unwillingness to express our emotions for fear of being rejected. On the other hand, when we may be running from something emotionally, we sometimes can experience diarrhea.

So, I knew I had to use an oil for her that helped her feel safer and help support proper elimination of poop and emotions surrounding it. I chose to use Roman Chamomile.

Roman Chamomile can be a great digestive, sleep aid, and pain reliever but where she really shines is helping us to feel safer.

Roman Chamomile essential oil

I added 6 drops of Roman Chamomile to our Green oil bottle (10ml), then filled it with carrier oil (Fractionated Coconut Oil or Almond Oil can work well here).

Carrier Oil – Fractionated Coconut

Shook it for a good 2-3 minutes and let it sit for a day in a cool and dark area.

When it was ready, I presented the oil to her, and she was so excited to have her very own essential oil blend. She told me “thank you.”

I let her smell the essential oil blend we made together.

Then as part of her nighttime routine we began rubbing 3 drops of our nighttime blend on her lower abdomen.

As we developed this routine, she now knows what the essential oil is for and that these essential oil combinations offer some assistance. It isn’t pure magic as she still deals with some fears, but we keep at it and often when she feels abdominal pain she will say, “Daddy, I nee ma oil! I nee ma oil!

Since introducing Roman Chamomile, I see less constipation moments and a child who is becoming open to preventive, natural modalities. God is good.
