Applying Essential Oils For Children

As many of you know our oldest daughter has special needs and faces many challenges on a daily basis. She has immense courage.

Due to the fact that I have a child with special needs I tend to get a lot of questions from other parents who have children with different challenges. One of the biggest challenges about essential oils for highly sensitive individuals can be the intensity of a truly pure oil. They can be very strong!

Here is a question I have received a lot over the years and it came up again recently:

“Gav, my child doesn’t like strong smells. They won’t let me near them with oils. How can I apply them topically to them if they won’t let me near?”

That is a very valid question. As a parent you have to clarify what is the real challenge. So ask yourself,

Does the child struggle with how strong the scent is?

Is the child okay with the scent, but the child just doesn’t want to have essential oils applied?

Or is it that the child struggles with the scent and the idea of having oils applied?

If the child really is just not a fan of the smell then oils could be applied to the bottom of the feet and a sock placed on the foot to cover up the smell. It lessens the intensity greatly.

If the child does not want essential oils applied, but is okay with the scent then place a diffuser in their room and help them get the benefit that way.

Now, if the child does not like the smell and does not want to be touched you may have to go undercover.

Many of the best Central Nervous System supportive oils are what we call base oils. These essential oils tend to have a heavier, longer lasting scent. But along with the heaviness comes the calming of the CNS.

Examples of great single base notes and blends with powerful base notes for the brain and nerves could be:

If a child is over 9 then a drop undiluted on the bottom of the feet will be fine due to the callused nature of the feet. If it is a child over 2 and under 9, I would apply 1, drop in a teaspoon of Fractionated Coconut Oil to the bottom of the feet to begin. This has shown to assist our children to sleep deeper for greater repair.

Lastly, if an application to the feet while asleep does not work, then turn on the diffuser after they have gone to sleep for CNS and sleep support.
